How Flash is Changing App Delivery, Productivity in the Datacenter [VIDEO]

Wikibon co-founder and chief analyst Dave Vellante says that the gap between processor and disk speeds is “like the distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles”, a challenge that is mitigated – but not solved – at the expense of application response times and business agility. He explained this condition and detailed how flash does away with it in his latest piece on Wikibon.

Vellante writes that the “the delta between processor and disk speeds was negligible” when the data center was still in its infancy, but that has changed. The performance lead of modern processors over disk systems has increased a millionfold, and IT systems because infinitely more complex as a result.

Vellante notes that “this difference has been offset by reading and writing large blocks, increasing the multi-programming levels of OS and file systems, increasing the number of cores, increasing the IP invested into the IO storage controllers and, most importantly of all, increasing the functionality and complexity of the database systems to protect data, primarily from Oracle, IBM and Microsoft.”

Flash eliminates this complexity by canceling the trip to L.A. The silicon-based storage technology is not constrained by the mechanical limitations that froze disk in time, and is therefore capable of keeping up with even the speediest CPUs.

By bringing the processor IO gap, flash is bringing function back to the storage array. It paves the way for a flatter database structure that facilitates secure, multi-tenant access to the database – a necessity for both Big Data workloads and hyperscale computing.

Hyperscale, the ultra-efficient data center paradigm pioneered by the likes of Google and Facebook, is flipping the world upside down, SiliconAngle founding CEO John Furrier explained in his recent article.  You can learn more about Flash’s impact on application delivery and system design by watching Vellante’s full segment below:
