A slew of product announcements marked the beginning of the annual OpenStack Summit in Portland, a four-day geek fest that kicked off this morning.

Red Hat entered the fray with the launch of RDO, an open-source distribution of OpenStack that’s optimized to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora, the de facto community edition of the former. Red Hat also announced that RHO, the commercial version of RDO, has graduated from “preview” status to an Early Adopter Program.

NetApp didn’t reveal a new enterprise offering today, but it did submit a prototype and proposal for a file share service capability to the OpenStack Foundation Technical Committee. NetApp argues that augmenting the OpenStack Block Storage project (also known as Cinder) with a file share service will enable users to run apps written for file-based storage without a third party management interface.

The company’s prototype includes code, extended APIs and, not surprisingly, a reference and a back-end implementation based on its proprietary storage solutions.  Hear more about it straight from NetApp’s Jeff O’Neal, who shared details during a visit to theCube earlier today.

CloudByte, an emerging software-defined storage firm that sells QoS software to service providers, also made a contribution to Cinder this morning. The startupunveiled a driver that allows users to create and manageCloudByte volumes directly from OpenStack clients.

The third data center endor that managed to make a splash at the Summit is Hewlett-Packard, which unveiled the latest version of its CloudSystem private cloudplatform. Version 7.2 introduces support for RedHat KVM resource pools and OpenStack “bursting” capabilities that allow customers to stream resources between multiple CloudSystems.  V7.2 is joined by something called HP Cloud Messaging, a new service that uses the OpenStack Marconi API standard to help developers create more fault-tolerant applications.
