“With OpenStack, we’ve hit critical mass,” says Cloudscaling CTO

At the 2013 OpenStack Summit, Randy Bias, CTO and Co-Founder of Cloudscaling, stopped by theCube to discuss the current status of OpenStack and Cloudscaling with hosts John Furrier and Jeff Frick.

Bias began by giving his insight as to why OpenStack has been so successful. It has a large and growing number of production deployments, almost one hundred, he stated. When you look at the top storage vendors, blade vendors, and switch vendors, among many others, they’re all in on OpenStack. That means that the level of industry support is so high, it would be difficult for OpenStack not to be a continued success.

John Furrier asked Bias for an update on Cloudscaling, and where he sees in the future moving forward with OpenStack. Bias explained that most of the customer base is enterprise, including LivingSocial, Evault, Ubisoft, and IBS DataFort. The use cases vary; from customers building their own platform as a service, to building public cloud, to building more elastic private cloud models, enabling repatriation of Amazon Web Service workloads.

With OpenStack, we’ve hit critical mass, Bias stated. The perspective has changed from “OpenStack is one of many” to “OpenStack is the only one,” largely because of that industry support. The foundation’s arrival has really catalyzed the big vendor support, which really validates our progress. When IBM says, “We’re using OpenStack,” people
listen.

We’re still trying to figure out our options in terms of computing, storage, and networking, Bias says of the future, OpenStack is like a giant framework, a toolkit for building many different types of clouds. The main goal for the foundation at this time is to foster innovation and adoption. The world is moving more towards tailor-made solutions to specific use cases, and that’s where OpenStack is leading the charge.
