The Ouya Game Platform Reaches Milestone of 10,000 Developers

In March, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman stated that there were already 8,000 developers working on games for its gamebox.  And in less than a month, Ouya hit a milestone as there are already 10,000 game developers working on titles for the Ouya gamebox which will be released commercially in June 4, 2013.

“It’s really awesome, especially at this early stage of the console still being in the preview period. The last month I’ve been so excited to just interact with the Ouya developers who are really people who signed on to the mission statement of Ouya early on and are the people who are just as excited as we are about the platform. It’s been great to hear and that the number continues to grow at such a rapid pace is very validating,” Kellee Santiago, co-founder of Thatgamecompany, remarked to GamesIndustry International.

Santiago also noted that it can be expected for Ouya games to be a little rough around the edges compared to titles released for used in top game consoles as, but more developers appreciate the game streaming platform, Ouya games could compete.  Prominent studious could also start developing games for Ouya when it sees that there is a huge demand for this new kind of game console – yes, the Ouya team is optimistic about gamers’ acceptance of the gamebox.

“The Ouya has been on our radar since the Kickstarter for this Android-based gaming console hit the news,” says DevOpsANGLE editor Kyt Dotson. “The potential openness of the platform connected to the Android OS means that developers don’t need to learn a brand new system in order to write or port games to it. Furthermore, its cheap price point also means that it could be easily imported into the living room on an almost impulse buy. Consumers will find it interesting that they can play the exact same games on their console as they have on their phone or smart device.”

In other Ouya news, for those early Kickstarter investors that already received their Ouya, you’d be pleased to know that there’s a new firmware update available that allows users to edit credit card info, manage menu reorganization, and a fix for for Parse Errors that occurs when downloading some apps.

The Ouya gamebox has started shipping in late March to early Kickstarter investors and will be commercially available in June.  There will be more than 100 game titles upon launch, but there are almost 500 titles slated to be released for Ouya.
