Mary Meeker Unveils Internet Trends Report 2013

Internet analyst Mary Meeker has achieved an almost legendary status in the tech world for her annual Internet Trends report. Now a partner with venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufiled Byers, Ms. Meeker has just unveiled a whole new set of slides at the D11 Conference, showing among other things, huge growth in the number of mobile and broadband internet users.

Here’s a few select highlights of Meeker’s report:

No Stopping Mobile Growth

Meeker’s data shows there are now 2.4 billion internet users in the world, up by 8% from one year ago, with the biggest growth coming from emerging markets like Indonesia and Iran. The vast majority of these new usersare accessing the web using mobile devices – there are now 1.5 billion mobile subscribers, up from 1.1 billion a year ago, representing growth of almost 30%. Meeker shows that mobile devices now account for 15% of all web traffic in the world.

The Internet of Things

Wearables, driveables, flyables, shareables, there’s no stopping them. Up until now its always been about the rise of PCs and smartphones. Not any more. The next decade will witness an astonishing rise in the growth of wearable computing devices, such as Google Glass and an assortment of fitness/health monitoring gadgets. In addition, we’re going to see new categories emerge, like connected cars, smart infrastructure, drones and more. In turn, this will lead to a new revolution in personal data.

Personal Data’s Gonna Explode

Web users have become accustomed to sharing just about every aspect of their lives on social media – or so they think. Well, get ready because this trend is about to go into overdrive. At present, the most popular content people like to share is photos, but it won’t stop here. With the rise of the Internet of Things, we’re going to see all kinds of personal data emerge from our connected devices into the void, growing exponentially for the foreseeable future.

Facebool Still Rulez, OK?

Despite all the buzz about sites like Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Waze at the moment, it’s good ole’ Facebook that continues to rule the roost, and by some distance too. It’s also managing the transition into mobile rather well, driving its revenues and growth further still. However, Meeker notes that other sites like those mentioned above are slowly getting bigger too.

We Just Love Our Frickin’ Photos, Don’t We?

Meeker says that on average, over 500 million photos are uploaded to the web every single day, and that figure is set to double each year for the next few years. The unlikely leader here is Snapchat, with Facebook and Instagram not far behind. According to Meeker, Snapchat has doubled its number of users in the last two months. She says that Snapchat’s content is unique, because none of it is tagged or searchable. “That’s a secular move from a generation that has uploaded everything,” she adds.

Meeker also points to the success of video sharing sites like Vine and Dropcam, saying that these can expect to see rapid growth too.

Americans are Stingy

One of the more interesting finds in Meeker’s treasure trove is that when it comes to sharing, people in the US are far stingier than their foreign friends. Globally, 24% of people claim to share “most or everything”, but in the US only 15% say the same.
