3 Things You Probably Love (or Hate) About the iOS 7 Redesign

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is all set for June 10-14 in San Francisco and talks about its new iOS is abundant.

It was previously reported that Apple Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jony Ive have redesigned the iOS to sport a flat look and a more black and white color theme.

Codenamed Innsbruck, iOS 7 will include redesigned native apps – the apps such as Notes, Calendar, and Mail will have a general white appearance but with colored outlines, and the Game Center app will lose the chess piece and the green felt.  The notification bar will lose its linen texture and will probably include more information, and there may be widgets for information at a glance that can be accessed with a simple swipe gesture.

The weather app will be spiced up with animations to reflect the weather, there might be a standalone FaceTime app, the shiny bar on top of your locked screen will lose its shine, and will be replace with a black bar with white used for the time, and a panoramic wallpaper that reveals other parts of the wallpaper as you swipe the screen.

There will also be new features added to the iOS such as integration with Flickr and Vimeo and an improved in-car support for Maps and Siri.

Some cannot wait for Apple to reveal the iOS 7, but based on the rumored changes and new features, some are either liking or hating it.

Pros

Black and white is a classic look and will make iDevices look more sophisticated.  The iPhone 5 looks sleek with its metal and glass finish, maturing the new look for adults and business professionals.

Change may be a good thing, especially when that something hasn’t been updated for the longest time.  Android can be forked, which means you won’t find a unifying experience across all the Android devices coming from different brands, and this is a good thing because people have different tastes.  By adding more functionality, more information at a glance, Apple would be delivering a whole new experience for their users.

The redesign is said to be Apple’s take on delivering a unified experience across all their devices, from the Mac to the iPad and of course the iPhone and the iPod Touch.  Apple wants to people to have the same experience no matter what device they are on.  This is a marketing push to ‘Go Apple’.

Cons

Though black and white usually denotes a classic look, not many from Apple’s beloved younger generation will welcome the new look.  Some teens prefer the colorful side of life thus they adorn their devices with colorful casings.  Apple may gain more adults in the process but it risks losing the younger generation.  Also, the new color scheme may be perceived as dull and boring.

Though the panoramic wallpaper may look great, it’s already been done on an Android device, specifically by Samsung.  So this may spark up a new legal feud between the two.  Apple better think of something that does not closely resemble what Samsung has, or get a license from the South Korean giant to avoid another lawsuit.

Change is not always good.  Think about it.  More people buy an iPhone each year because they like the fact that the look stays generally the same, the interface is the same and nothing has drastically changed in over the years.  If Apple changes too much, and if users do not like the widgets or the look of the redesigned apps, then people may not be so receptive of the new iOS and possibly new iDevices.

What about you?  Of the rumored changes happening on iOS 7, what do you like or hate most about it?  Tell us your thoughts.
