Edgecast Is the Insurance Policy of the Web | #velocityconf

For the second day of the O’Reilly Velocity Conference 2013, broadcasting live from Santa Clara, CA, theCUBE host John Furrier talked to James Segil, President of Edgecast, about TransACT, SailFish, and accelerating dynamic websites.

Everyone is now realizing that the cloud, mobile and real-time represents the future, and it’s here already. And there’s a lot of pressure on the IT guys to rebuild and re-architect. Edgecast is the insurance policy of websites, building a system that’s modern. The company is both a software company (a SaaS platform that runs in the cloud) and a Network. “We provide a huge amount of infrastructure, bandwidth and delivery for a lot of websites,” says Segil. Edgecast boasts 6000 customers (about 5% of the Internet).

You have to be able to support every single format of file out there and for this, the company needs to be incredibly cutting-edge. “So we distributed our servers in a very logical way that’s relevant to today’s internet,” says Segil.

In today’s centralized internet you want to be the main aggregation point, and you want to have massive storage, compute capacity, in an Agile scalable cloud infrastructure. And that’s what Edgecast has built.

“We accelerate dynamic websites with Application Delivery Network, which is allowing us to take any dynamic request and make it go fast, and that gives the performance benefit to these websites. Performance is everything,” stated Segil. “We can’t go down; we are the insurance policy for these websites.”

“We have a new solution called Transact, a dedicated e-commerce network. We built a custom network specifically for internet retailers, and it is completely segregated,” said Segil. If big names customers using this are under attack,  we don’t have to worry about the risks, as it won’t affect the e-commerce activity.  “As a retailer, you need to de-risk every element of your delivery”, says Segil.

What’s next for the company? This is actually the third business that the founders have built together. “We like to solve problems. We like to deliver value and we figured out a way to address a real problem in the marketplace,” stated Segil.
