Quick How-To for Video on Instagram + #RIPVine Memes

So Instagram announced Vine, I mean video on Instagram today. Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom unveiled the new video product at an event at Facebook’s headquarters on Thursday. Instagram boasts 130 million active users each month and users post a total of 16 billion photos each day, Systrom said. Oh, and Instagram see’s over 1 billion “likes” added to the service every day. And Vine, well…

Here’s the √ or X on Instagram video:

  1. √ Instagram users can take 3 to 15 seconds of video.
  2. √ Video on Instagram do not loop (like Vine).
  3. √ Video on Instagram does auto-start (like Vine).
  4. X A screen-capture to “re-post” a video does not work like with pictures. The video will not carry through, you’ll just post a screen shot of the video play screen.
  5. √ The video product will work for both iOS and Android.
  6. X No zoom in/out (like Vine)
  7. √ The 3-15 second video can be broken up to as many smaller sections as you want.

Here is the quick how-to use video on Instagram:

1. Press the video image


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Press + hold the record button for duration you wish your video to be.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Every time that you press then let go, Instagram creates a ‘section’ of your video.
4. You are able to have more than one portion (reads non-consecutive 3-15 second video).
5. Let’s say you don’t like a portion. You can choose and then delete the most recent section of your video.
6. You cannot go skip over sections 5 and 6 to section 2 or 3 to delete. You can only delete the most recent section.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7. Choose one of 13 filters, such as Stinson, Vesper and Dogpatch.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

8. Choose a Cover Frame for your photo, auto-populated by the Instagram app.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

9. You’re now to a familiar screen. Add a caption, add to your photo map, and choose to share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Email or Foursquare.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

10. Click Share and you’re off!

So what about Twitter’s Vine? Well…they went on the offensive today ahead of the announcement out of Facebook headquarters and teased a slew of new features. New features or not, Twitter + Vine better have something bigger or better up their sleeves. I’ll leave you with the best #RIPVine’s I found.
