RightScale’s Bailey Caldwell Talks Multi-Cloud and the Big Players in the Cloud Space | #velocityconf

Bailey Caldwell, VP of Business Development RightScale, discussed the latest cloud trends with theCUBE co-hosts Dave Vellante and John Furrier, live at the O’Reilly Velocity conference in Santa Clara.

“The management tool of the future will be the cloud,” Caldwell stated. “We help customers run software on private, public, and hybrid cloud.” As a front end provisioning system for Amazon, Caldwell said that RightScale had a great relationship with Amazon. They are also an ISV partner and a consultant partner. However, “other larger scale providers are coming into the market, it’s about choosing the right infrastructure for your company.” Cloud companies need differentiators, as there is a lot of demand for choice. The companies of the future, he explained, would focus on how to take advantage of all the available resources.

“Our goal is to provide access to all these different resources, because ultimately that is our value proposition,” Caldwell said. Currently, Amazon is the biggest player in the public cloud market.

Focused on innovation

RigthScale’s strategy is to focus on what enterprises need to be successful and provide a high-grid infrastructure. “The thing we’re focused on is innovating on top of these cloud platforms.” While there are a lot of ways to execute cloud strategies, “we’ve proven there’s a way to do it in a multi-cloud world.” RightScale focused on multi-cloud since late 2007, “but we always thought there will be multiple choices in the market. There is always going to be a no. 1” and then several other competitors.

Asked if Amazon has a chance in the enterprise, Caldwell that Amazon already had thousands of enterprise customers. He also highlighted a recent test on scale and performance you can achieve when running apps on public cloud run on Google’s infrastructure. “In an hour we went from 1 to 200o users” and there were almost no issues.  “The compute engine platform all ran exceptionally well. It’s our view that providing those choices will really be the key,” as companies can choose to run their apps and services wherever they want.

Asked on the progress of Google in the cloud space, Caldwell said the IT giant was taking infrastructure and turning it into a commercial product. It is already available for everyone who wants to use it. Google Compute Engine can be purchased both through their site and through RightScale. Cusomers in the online learning space and other areas with variable workloads are the most interested in Google’s offering. “Google has a platform out there with compelling services,” he added.

  • Cloud is more than just cheap infrastructure

“It’s clear that cloud is a viable component of any it company’s strategy,” Caldwell said. “It’s not just cheaper infrastructure, it’s about how you enable your business. It’s really about strategy, not technology.” Before adopting cloud services, companies need to look at their own skill sets. “There is a whole generation of IT users that we need to bring into the cloud world,” he added.

Asked about the multi-vendor issue in the cloud space, Caldwell said: “we’ve been lucky enough to forge relationships with all the providers. Clients should look at RightScale as the cloud. If you’re going to use cloud, you have to put RightScale in your decision makers.” In what the company’s future plans are, he said that it is “still focused on building the base infrastructure of our platform and we are going to extend our capabilities, continue to innovate, focus on our customers and their requirements.”
