VMware is of particular interest in the ongoing virtualization story, and the company is readying to unveil an update to Project Serengeti at the Hadoop Summit this week.  Launched last year in an effort to virtualize servers running the Hadoop framework, Project Serengeti set out to speed up the deployment and execution of Hadoop.

Today’s launch is expected to be a first step in commercially supporting implementation of Serengeti, expanding VMware’s profit potential in the cloud.  This initial offering will likely be rolled up in the next vSphere release for free, according to a report from The Register, with vSphere’s next version 5.2 expected to launch at VMworld at the end of August, shipping later this fall.

On today’s NewsDesk segment we’ll hear from Stu the progress VMware’s made since last year with Project Serengeti, how it fits in with VMware’s larger, joint goals for EMC Pivotal, and where Serengeti fits into the broader Hadoop ecosystem, an ecosystem that gets larger by the day.  Ahead of Hadoop Summit kicking off in San Jose, CA today, Hadoop framework provider Hortonworks landed a $50 million boost from its latest funding round.
