Atlassian, the leading provider of software for team collaboration products, announced the launch of Bamboo 5, the latest continuous integration (CI) server version. The public release of Bamboo 5 is scheduled for very soon–official release has been pushed to July 16th–and the company is billing Bamboo 5 as the first tool of its kind “to connect the process of preparing and testing software with the process of releasing it.”

Bamboo supports the seamless integration of automating the process of compiling the source code and test work programs. It not only saves time but also helps to identify problems and discrepancies in the very early stages of the build process.

Atlassian officials said enterprises are keen to break down the long-standing silos between product and operations groups with DevOps. Atlassian Bamboo acts as a merger the two biggest problems.

Bamboo 5 adds a number of new features related to DevOps and eliminates the collaboration between different project teams. Bamboo 5 enables software developers to not only automatically test the code but also connects with issues, commits, test results, and deploys, thus bridging the gap between project managers and Devs to testers and system administrators.

“We’re trying to cross pollinate the information that has traditionally been within one realm or the other and bring it all together so that these silos have better communication with each other,” explained Atlassian’s Sarah Goff-Dupont, marketing manager for Bamboo. “With Bamboo 5 we set out to give deployments and release management first class treatment within the continuous integration and continuous delivery tool space. It’s really the only true continuous delivery tool on the market.”

The solution provides automatic branching and merging for distributed version control systems such as Git and Mercurial, as well as the branching plans push-button for traditional version control systems such as Subversion, Perforce and CVS. Bamboo 5 fills the gap of lack of traceability between build and deployment processes and provides continuity in tracking changes from idea and implementation to delivery, enabling development teams and IT organizations to work better together with more coordination, efficiency and visibility around the process of releasing software.

Developers can then integrate the changes easily and quickly, regardless of the branch containing the new code. Bamboo Provides detailed builds information such as test results, comments, code changes, JIRA issues and more.

Bamboo 5 streamlines workflows, speeds disaster recovery and reduces time to market for new projects. Moreover, the tool connects to Atlassian’s issue tracking software, JIRA, to give the project team a clear view of whether a given feature or bug fix has been delivered. It also connects to Kanban boards, which allows QA to perform drag-and-drop deployments to their target environments.

“Duct-taped and inaccessible scripts are what most software deployment pipelines are made of,” said Jean-Michel Lemieux, Atlassian’s vice president of engineering, in a statement. “But the trip a feature takes from a developer’s machine to a customer must happen as quickly and repeatedly as possible–and must be visible to all teams. With Bamboo, we put development-centric information side-by-side with deployment tooling, and exposed ops-centric information inside JIRA.”

Atlassian is best known for its bug tracker JIRA, collaboration tool Confluence and agile project planning tool GreenHopper. The company also makes Stash, a premier on-site Git repository management system used by enterprises to take advantage of the flexibility of Git while maintaining control of code quality and development.
