Weekly Cloud Review: Kim Dotcom, Google Stick it to the NSA

This week Mega announced plans for a spy-proof messaging service, Google insiders revealed that the company is experimenting with new ways to encrypt files stored in Drive, and Telligent bought Zimbra from VMware. In other news, a group of Cisco partners released a study revealing that a sizable portion of corporate end-users are oblivious to the benefits of virtualization.

On Monday, we learned that Kim Dotcom’s file hosting service will roll out encrypted IM apps over the course of the next few weeks. The company also plans to launch a spy-proof email service in six to nine months. Mega chief executive Vikram Kumar said in a statement that the upcoming products are designed to address global concerns over governments collecting, storing, and analyzing all Internet traffic. These concerns are apparently shared by Google, which is reportedly experimenting with new encryption techniques that could be used to make its own cloud service locker more secure.

Word of Google’s efforts to revamp Drive came out around the same time social enterprise specialist Telligent announced that it’s buying Zimbra, a provider of collaboration and communication services that VMware acquired from Yahoo back in 2010. Telligent and Zimbra will merge under the latter name with the backing of Intel Ventures, the Hall Financial Group and other investors.

VMware sold Zimbra as part of a broader push to trim fat and double down on the increasingly competitive yet surprisingly low profile virtualization segment. A recent study commissioned by Cisco mConcierge partners found that nearly two thirds of employees don’t know if their organizations utilize virtualization solutions, and approximately 80 percent of VPs and SVPs are unfamiliar with the benefits of the technology. Furthermore, 40 percent of all workers – including IT personnel – have never heard of the term “virtualization.”
