Fusion-io Adds Business Objects Exec to Board of Directors

Two weeks after Hewlett Packard added a former Microsoft chief software architect and two other corporate big wigs to its board, Fusion-io announced that it has appointed John Olsen as a director. The veteran executive brings more than 30 years of industry experience to the company.

Olsen served as president and chief operating officer of Business Objects from 2001 to 2004. He previously held the position of CEO at infrastructure solutions provider Marimba, directed the Design Realization Group of Cadence Design Systems, and worked for KPMG Peat Marwick’s Strategic Services unit.

Olsen was appointed to the board of Borland Software in February 2005 and promoted to chairman 18 months later, a position he held until July 2009. He is now joining the Audit Committee and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee of Fusion-io’s board.

“We are pleased to welcome John to the board of directors,” said Shane Robison, the chairman and chief executive officer of Fusion-io. “John’s experience in steering technology companies through key stages of growth should add tremendous value to our business.”

Fusion-io’s latest hire underscores its efforts to gain more turf in the increasingly lucrative flash market. The company has made notable gains in recent months: it contributed its flash memory-based key-value interface to Facebook’s Open Compute project, and got its Atomic Writes API implemented in MariaDB, Percona Server 5.531 and the upcoming Percona Server 5.6.

The flash giant is expanding in all directons. Back in June, chief financial officer Dennis Woolf leaked the company’s plans to launch a new MLC card later this year. The solution will likely make its debut alongside Fusion-io’s 1X architecture, which is expected to feature a reduced cell-size of 15nm to 19nm.
