People Are Both Excited and Scared About DevOps | #VMworld

John Furrier and Stu Miniman, theCube co-hosts, caught up with Scott Sanchez, Director of Strategy at Rackspace, during the second day of VM World 2013 in San Francisco. Rackspace, the founder of OpenStack, has become the service leader in cloud computing, delivering enterprise-class hybrid cloud infrastructures to businesses of all sizes around the world.

“Cloud is being transformed in real-time,” said Furrier, kicking off the interview by asking Sanchez to comment on the challenges developers are addressing. “The best way to put things in perspective is to state that software has become the new hardware,” said Sanchez. “All the limitations that the developers had in dreaming up their applications and actually implementing them back when things were based on hardware was a limiting factor on how fast they could move. When you are in the infrastructure business, you work with infrastructure teams to meet the needs of the developers.”

Furrier is particularly excited by the DevOps going mainstream over the past few years. “DevOps has been a trend, kinda like the Alpha Geek, and now the apps are defining the infrastructure,” noted John, exemplifying with Facebook. “What does the mainstream DevOps guy look like?” asked Furrier.

“DevOps is not something that you go out and buy, it’s a mindset and an outcome,” replied Sanchez.”There are tools and platforms that allow you to move to that model.” He adds, “Our customers trust us with helping them on that journey because we’ve made it ourselves. We power our business with that model, and we’re helping our customers consume that same model.”

Rackspace is a leading provider of hybrid clouds, enabling businesses to run their workloads on public or private cloud, on dedicated servers or on a combination of these platforms.

ServiceMesh helps customers visualize and manage the entire process of deployment, so that they feel comfortable with it. According to Sanchez, “In terms of private cloud, there’s a demand for ServiceMesh and tools that not only help with the automation of configuring your application deployment, but on the governance. People are both excited and scared about the DevOps. Compliance, security and access control are pieces of it, but it also has a lot to do with the visibility of that process.”

Rackspace hosts one of the largest VMware environments, operating the largest OpenStack-based cloud, and has been featured on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.
