Big Data Has Evolved, says Alteryx | #tcc13

George Matthew, AlteryxWhen SiliconANGLE first brought big data to the attention of its viewers, it was still unclear just how far people would take it. It has since evolved and gained a foothold in many organizations. Alteryx is one such organization, and its President and COO, George Mathew sat down with The CUBE hosts Dave Vellante and Jeff Kelly to talk about how Tableau has helped Alteryx capitalize on its treasure trove of data to benefit customers.

Mathew described the evolution of big data as being in the third inning of a ball game. In the beginning they were trying to find ways to get the infrastructure prepared for this phenomenon, but now the questions are much deeper and focus on how to analyze, get better context, and make better decisions around large sets of information.

Today Alteryx focuses a great deal of energy on building at scale and also usability, how the user can take advantage of the data. Tableau provides that usability with its dashboards and visual analysis. Alteryx has similar goals, offering customers data integration and quality without having to be a programmer. “Instead they have all the power to do it themselves with the right tools in their hands,” said Mathew.

Rather than having a data czsar who oversees all operations, many Alteryx customers are now keeping these responsibilities closer to the line of business. For example, Walmart, one of its customers, uses Alteryx and Tableau together and has a global analytics team that studies the best cases for store openings, merchandising, and other scenarios.

In addition to internal data, Mathew says he has seen a steady growth in data outside of organizations such as social media and syndicated sources. He described how Rentrak, one of Alteryx’s biggest customers, was able to consolidate trillions of data points to glean demographic insights about TV viewers, knowledge they used to help their client, the Obama campaign, gain an edge in the 2012 election.

On the horizon, Alteryx hopes to increase scalability of its analytics. They hope customers will continue to benefit from their apps gallery and that they will continue to drive data and decision making within organizations.
