California Governor Jerry Brown is on a mission to get 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Charge Across Town, an initiative spearheaded by the Palo Alto City Councilmembers, along with  along with Bay Area electric vehicle, technology and environmental leaders, will be launching EV Week on September 25, 2013.

“EV Week 2013: San Francisco to Silicon Valley” is a three-city, five-day electric vehicle exposition designed to engage, educate and excite Bay Area drivers about the benefits, ease and accessibility of electric vehicle ownership.

If you still doubt the power of EVs on the road, EV Week is your chance to get to know the EVs better as they will be offering free EV Ride & Drives along San Francisco’s Embarcadero, around downtown Palo Alto, and on San Jose’s Santana Row.

Attendees will find interactive exhibits from PG&E, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Tesla, Chrysler, Zip Car, Scoot Networks, City Car Share, Pandora and others, including leading EV charging technology and mobile application providers.

EV Week will be at the Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco on September 23 and 24, at Palo Alto City Hall on September 25, and at the Santana Row in San Jose on September 26 and 27.

3 Major EV’s already on the Road

Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is one of the most affordable EVs out in the market, and is Nissan’s guinea pig working towards its dreams of releasing a fully automated car by 2020.  It’s a 100 percent electric car powered by a 24 kWh lithium ion battery.  The Leaf has a solar spoiler that charges the 12v accessory battery, which powers the stereo, climate control, and headlights.

It comes with the Carwings smartphone app that helps you find the nearest charging station, control the climate inside your car, and get a status of your vehicle.  Nissan’s EV also has heated seats in the front and back, as well as a heated steering wheel for those very cold days.  The Intelligent key allows you to lock and unlock your car doors just by tapping the key on any of the door handles, and it even starts the engine of the car.

Ford Focus Electric

The Ford Focus Electric has a 23 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery.  It has an accompanying MyFord mobile app that schedules when your car needs charging and finds the nearest charging station.  The charging port illuminates when the cord is connected and charging, an easy way to know if your car needs more juice or is good to go.

You don’t have to whip out your car key when you want to unlock your vehicle, and there’s a push-to-start button for the engine, so no more fumbling with your keys when you’re in a hurry.  The Ford Focus Electric also features regenerative braking, which means it captures 90 percent of energy lost through friction brakes and recycles it to recharge the battery.

Tesla Motors

Tesla produces all electric vehicles but compared to other car manufacturers, they are relatively new to the business.  Still, what they offer are top of the line EVs.  Just take a look at the Model S, which runs on either a 60 kWh, 85 kWh, or 85 kWh battery that is able to travel 208-300 miles on a single charge.  It goes from 0-60 in less than six seconds, and if you have a Tesla Supercharger, it can charge the battery by 50 percent in half an hour.

The Model S also sports a 17” touchscreen panel that controls different aspects of the car, such as the all-glass panoramic roof, music, navigation, and the camera.  It has a key that opens the door when you approach the vehicle, and turns on the engine when you get in the car.  The charging port is not visible but when you walk by the taillight on the driver’s side with a connector, the charging port opens and the connector locks in place while your car charges.  Plus it has a 5+2 seating configuration, which means it can comfortably carry five adults and two kids.
