Weekly Big Data Review: From Semi-Structured Data to Ultra-Fast Queries
Big Data vendors are not letting anything get in the way of their revolution. Companies like MemSQL are tearing down legacy barriers in a collective effort to move analytics into the enterprise mainstream.
The database startup recently updated its in-memory NewSQL platform to support JSON, a popular syntax for analyzing semi-structured data. As the first database to facilitate real-time analytics with the language, MemSQL gives users the ability to process data sources of different types via a single unified interface. This functionality can be leveraged to enhance operational analytics, network security and risk management, as well as other data-driven processes such as product recommendation engines.
Hadapt is also working to make data more consumable for analysts. The company announced on Monday that it has refreshed its SQL-on-Hadoop solution with a new schema that adds support for multi-structured data such as documents and key-value pairs. Like the latest release of MemSQL, Hadapt’s solution aims to simplify the task of analyzing disparate data sources.
For MapR, performance took precedence over ease of use this week. The company rolled out a new version of its M7 Hadoop distribution that offers four to ten times greater throughput and consistent read latency of less than 20 milliseconds. The firm says that the platform is designed for mission-critical enterprise applications that have historically relied on relational systems.
Analytics startup C9 is also pushing the Big Data envelope with a cloud-based platform that leverages real-time and historical data to map organizations’ financial performance. The service has been augmented with 27 new capabilities, including push notifications and device-independent reporting. C9 announced the update after closing a $12 million Series D funding round led by Mayfield Fund. The capital will be used to boost marketing and accelerate product development.
