Syncsort Picks Up UK Startup to Unlock Information Silos

Three weeks after partnering with Tableau to unlock isolated Big Data silos, Syncsort has acquired Circle Computer Group to simplify analytics for mainframe users. The London-based startup is best known for DL/2, an application migration tool that can move IBM IMS and VSAM workloads to the more modern DB2 database software and z/OS without requiring time-consuming code rewrites.

Besides being cost-effective, Circle’s software also addresses the “skills challenges many organizations face due to dwindling IMS and VSAM expertise.” With over 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies using the 30-plus year old database for mission-critical processes, the buy positions Syncsort to expand its already massive footprint in the mainframe market.

The acquisition of Circle kicks off the ambitious growth strategy of new CEO Lonne Jaffe, a CA Technologies veteran who was brought onboard in June to expand the company’s data integration lineup. Prior to joining CA, he served as the vice president of software technology at IBM.

“The early adopters of Hadoop ─ the consumer Internet companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter ─ didn’t have mainframes,” Jaffe said in a statement. “Over the next decade, as Big Data technology adoption accelerates in large enterprises such as banks, governments, retailers and hospitals, powerful software that allows secure access to the vast stores of the world’s mainframe data by these next-generation platforms will become increasingly important.”

Last month, Syncsort launched a partner program for regional systems integrators with analytics expertise. Participants of the program are offered a free version of the firm’s DMX ETL solution, along with “use case accelerators” and sample data. Partners can also download sales tools, technical information and training materials from the firm’s web-based Partner Edge Portal.
