Cisco Partners with PT to Expand Smart Cities Initiative into New Market

IBM and Cisco have a lot in common. Besides dominating their respective markets, the tech juggernauts are also both working to make smart cities a reality across the globe. Just this week, the networking giant entered into a strategic partnership with Portugal Telecom to deliver new Smart+Connected solutions across Europe, Latin America and Africa.

As part of the three-year initiative, Cisco will collaborate with PT’s IT services division and partner ecosystem to establish public Smart Work Centers with secure WiFi, readily-available collaboration software and business services such as reception, catering and daycare. The centers will enable employers to better support mobile workers through more flexible work options.

Cisco and PT will also help municipalities modernize wireless internet infrastructure to fulfill “the need for increased security, energy conservation, and the enhanced productivity of a digital lifestyle.” The pair will provide software and services to help reduce traffic congestion and pollution, streamline parking, and deliver personalized content for sports fans.

Anil Menon, the president of Smart+Connected Communities and deputy chief globalization officer at Cisco, highlighted that “PT is a natural partner for Cisco as it is fully aligned with positioning ICT as a strategic differentiator, putting technology at the foundation of its service offerings. Cisco is proud to collaborate with PT on initiatives that will help transform how cities and work spaces are built, managed and experienced.”

For Cisco, the partnership presents opportunity to expand its reach into a new and rapidly growing market. Portugal Telecom also stands to benefit from the deal by leveraging the vendor’s technology and know-how to improve its solutions.

While Cisco is focused on driving productivity and consumer experiences in major cities, IBM is pursuing a broader vision of tomorrow’s connected world. From Ghana to Dubuque, Iowa, Big Blue is improving business and society around the globe.
