New Poll Reveals Browser Games Leads Console Games in Popularity

A new survey staged by Goo Technologies and conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive suggests that browser games have aced out the console gaming market in the US. The findings of its 2013 State of Browser Gaming Index fielded among more than 2,000 Americans, aged 18 and older found that 52 percent gamer preferred browser games above any other type of game.

Today, an increasing number of users are using mobile phones and tablets to play games. The survey found that 85 percent of Americans prefer mobile as there is no compromise on quality, speed or graphics and they would want to play them on their mobile device from anywhere. More than eighty-five percent of gamers who own a mobile device (smartphones/tablets), and who play browser-based games say they would prefer to play mobile games anywhere including in bed (45 percent), at work (25 percent) and even during sex (2 percent). Nearly 52 percent non married Americans play browser-based games while married people favoring them less (62% to 48%).

More than 59 percent of users preferred browser games for the massive cost savings, saying it was less expensive than buying a console, 43 percent said browser games would save them to download and install software, while 31 percent favored not being tied down to just one console, and 26 percent liked the ability to better interact with friends online.

However, browser games don’t work well when it comes to gamer satisfaction. In fact, 59 per cent of gamers who have played a browser-based game say they wished the games worked better, whether they are played in a desktop, laptop or mobile browser. More than 24 per cent respondent say they prefer better user experience of strategy games in browser, while the number is 22 per cent for shooter games, 19 percent for multiplayer games, 16 percent for both virtual world/roleplaying games 6 percent for sexy character-based games and 4 percent for dating and hookup games.

“While the results of the survey may seem amusing, they point to a real desire for high quality games to be available from anywhere without expensive hardware or software downloads,” said Marcus Kruger, chairman, Goo Technologies. “Games powered by Goo, such as the wildly popular launch of Casinofloor.com in Sweden, are showing the world that truly immersive 3D games can be accessed as easily as typing in a web address,” added Kruger.

Considering that many browser games cost free of charge and available in a variety of services like Kongregate, Armor Games, and several others, it is a growing concern for console maker. The console game makers also need to watch on the growing number of mobile devices available for sale.
