Ouya Hits First Major Milestone, Developers Count Now Tops 25,000

There is no doubt that Ouya is a platform that dazzled Internet audiences from the first minute. For evidence of this one need only look at the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, where the developer pocketed over eight million dollars. Since then, many, many indie developers have jumped on the bandwagon of the micro console with Android.

In March, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman stated that there were already 8,000 developers working on games for its gamebox.  And in less than a month, Ouya hit a milestone as there were already 10,000 game developers.

Now, ahead of the Android-based micro console’s European launch, Ouya has attracted over 25,000 developers. The extraordinary figure comes from Ouya itself, according to a Develop report.

The number reflects how many developers have sign up, but since the console acts as its own development kit, anyone with a valid email id can sign up as a developer. Ouya did not say how many of the 25,000 registered users are actively developing projects.

The gaming console will hit Europe later this month, after it’s been available in the UK and US for four months. The company’s Ouya store now brags 466 games. With 25,000 teams working for the system, the future of the platform is more than assured. It recently announced changes to its Free the Games fund, which provides funding to developers who successfully crowdfund Ouya-based projects.

Among the 25,000 artists who have joined the bandwagon of Ouya, most popular catalogue include TowerFall, Clark, Sine Mora, Another World, Reaper and recently included title comprise 2013 IGF finalist Santa Ragione’s MirrorMoon, Sneaky Games’ Arena of Heroes and Pixeljams’s Potato Man Seeks the Troof.

Although the audience reception was lukewarm, the CEO Uhrman reported that as many as 27 percent Ouya owners have purchased premium game. To support these developers, Ouya has started offering Free Games Fund program. This project is really intended to encourage developers to develop games exclusively on the Ouya MicroConsole platform. Once again, Ouya is using Kickstarter to get started and if the target stretch of U.S. $50,000 is met, owners can enjoy the exclusive games that do not exist on other Android platforms.

The success or failure of Free Fund Games is arguably the benchmark for Ouya fate in the next three to four years, and Ouya seems really need it to be stealing the attention of prospective customers. The general opinion is divided on the console hardware’s success; some say it’s too early to judge its performance, and Ouya is happy with an 8% attach rate. Other developers said they’re quite pleased with better than expected sales.
