The human edge of Big Data | #BigDataNYC

The Big Data market is on the verge of a new era, with information becoming more accessible through a combination of self-service capabilities and advanced visualization features. Edd Dumbill, the vice president of strategy for Silicon Valley Data Science, appeared on theCUBE at SiliconANGLE’s recently concluded Big Data NYC 2013 event to share his unique perspective on the cutting-edge technologies that are making analytics practical for business users.

When it comes to Big Data solutions, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Nowhere can this been seen more clearly than in Hadoop, which Dumbill says is a batch processing framework that is following in the footsteps of Linux to become an operating system for apps and services. The transition underscores the need to unify analytics and operationalize data, he continues.

The consolidation of Big Data is driven by the same maturing user experience requirements that help advance the adoption of cloud-based analytics, in-memory databases and stream processing solutions. All of these technologies empower analysts to generate faster business insights.

“The real important thing in solving Big Data problems is the person,” Dumbill tells theCUBE hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante. “If you have to wait 10 minutes between queries coming back, that person goes to sleep, losses their flow and they’re not empowered. So the real important thing about real time and in-memory database technology is that it empowers the analyst to explore interactively rather than going off to sleep and losing their threat while the query runs.”

Like real time analytics, gamification is also a playing an increasingly important role in shaping user experiences. Dumbill perceives the methodology as a new paradigm for software development, enabling developers to “respect the humanity” of their users and boost engagement as a result.
