The data center is the foundation of any cloud |O #reinvent

Brian Fanzo, the Technology Evangelist at IO, discussed the data center supporting everyone’s cloud and the company’s views of software controlled data centers with theCUBE co-hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante, live at the AWS re:Invent conference.

“From IO’s perspective, the data center is the foundation of any cloud, the cloud has to live somewhere,” Fanzo. “At IO we have a global footprint of data centers that we operate.” IO moved to the modular approach, to adding the software, to create a data center operating software. The concept they adopt is “software controlled data center.”

Commenting on the build your own, customization trends, Fanzo said that “to be a hybrid on premise, you need a data center on premise. We have modules that can actually be dropped at any location. You need software that ties data center together. That is where the software defined  data center comes in. Our software bridges that gap.”

What makes IO different

Asked to explain the difference between the IO data center and others in the market, Fanzo mention the IO footprint that covers multiple locations. The Phoenix site is the headquarter. “Security is a big deal, what we are able to do about our software for the data center, we control the data center, but also provide security for it.” Looking  into the modular section of the data center, “the security layers now take another step. One of the big things with security is you want layers, and to actually be able to control those layers with the software. You can block off your security per module, it is separated between your it gear and the infrastructure below.”

IO’s data center covers over two million square feet globally. “We have higher density IT than that square footage,” he explained. IO PODs are designed and manufactured, everything is fine tuned. “With our modules, we’ve engineered every square inch of them.” Each module has 800 individual sensors controlled by IO software.

IO has over a million operating hours. “We have that much data to actually go back and analyze” and determine if they cab drive higher density, it they are over-provisioning, or un-derprovisioning. “At IO you can build out, scale it out, increase your density without procuring something else instead of build another data center or buy another module.”

What’s tomorrow’s data center look like?

Asked what would happen to the data center in the future, Fanzo explained data centers used to be mainly real estate. “We aren’t a data center company where we’re just a real estate company. We’ve gone modular. One day they can take modules and run them up the mountain if they wanted to.” Being able to scale eliminates the walls of the data center and square footage and location won’t matter, he says. “Using our software to bridge our locations, you are actually able to not only manage and control data centers form anywhere, but also shift data loads between them.”

“The cloud evolution is interesting,” Fanzo  stated. Enterprises are shifting responsibility. “We’re at the level with the cloud, we don’t want to have any control, we know the data center won’t go away, it’s the foundation of anyone’s cloud. When it comes down, we all want connectivity 100% of the time, with our software the operating system actually gives our customers the ability to shift that responsibility to something they can log into” to view updates and notifications.

Commenting on the cost of computing, Fanzo  said, “we want to give you the option to login and see in real time what the power and cooling going into the data center is.” Intelligent control goes beyond just the software. The billion hours of operation generate data that can be analyzed, and using IO software customers can control their environment. “We want to eliminate the downtime and concern of our customers.”
