Netflix wishlist 2014 : Original series we’d love to see

2014 is just two months away, and this means a lot of things for different people.  While most are anxious for a fresh start, others know the new year delivers new TV shows.  Whether it’s the latest season of your favorite show, or a program debut, many will be looking to Netflix to get their fill.

The streaming service has been doing really well this year, especially after reviving the popular comedy series Arrested Development.  Some are even claiming that it is now larger than HBO, a triumph that’s been sealed ever since Netflix began offering original content, such as Lilyhammer and House of Cards.

Netflix subscribers will be delighted to know that the streaming service will be delivering new seasons of its popular shows, as well as new original programs for the coming year. CNET reports that Netflix will be doubling its original content in 2014 with the release of a new drama, sci-fi, psychological thriller, comedy, and even an animated series.

So what has Netflix got in store for viewers this coming 2014?  The list below isn’t confirmed just yet, but here’s what we expect to see next year.

Top Netflix Shows to watch out for in 2014

  • Lilyhammer

Season two of Lilyhammer, an American-Norwegian comedy-drama series, is expected to debut in December 2013.  The story revolves around the life of Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano, a New York gangster trying to start a new life when he is placed under witness protection in isolated Lillehammer, Norway, after testifying against his former associates.

Though the new locale makes it easy for Tagliano to start anew, he can’t help but find himself doing his old tricks such as blackmail, extortion, and violence to get ahead with his new life.  Will the authorities stop to Tagliano’s shady ways?  Or will he build an empire in this quiet little town?

  • House of Cards

The series’ second season is scheduled to air in February 2014.  House of Cards is an American political drama that revolves around the life of Frank Underwood, a Democrat from South Carolina’s 5th congressional district and the House Majority Whip, who is seeking revenge on those who betrayed him after getting passed over for appointment to Secretary of State.  Will he succeed in bringing his enemies down to get to the top?

  • Orange is the New Black

The second season of this dramedy will likely be released in Spring 2014, though Netflix has told us this is an unconfirmed release date. Orange is the New Black is a memoir of Piper Chapman, a woman now living the law-abiding life as an upper middle class New Yorker.

The story tells the tale of Chapman’s imprisonment, 10 years prior, for transporting a suitcase full of drug money for an international drug smuggler who was also her former lover.  How was Chapman able to transform her life from someone who transports drug money to becoming one of New York’s upper middle class?

New Netflix shows in 2014

  • Turbo: F.A.S.T.

Netflix has partnered with DreamWorks to launch their first original series for children.  Turbo FAST is a high-octane ensemble comedy series teaming the world-famous super-powered snail Turbo with his posse of adrenaline-junkie buddies from the Fast Action Stunt Team (FAST).  Premiering in December 2013.

  • Sense8

[update] Netflix has informed us this program is not slated for release.

We’ve also heard word of a new show from The Wachowskis called Sense8, a sci-fi drama that revolves around a group of people from different parts of the world that are suddenly linked mentally.  These special people must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s current social order.

Expectations are high for the new series since The Wachowskis are known for producing heart-racing and mind-boggling movies such as the Matrix franchise.  Sense8 is not yet scheduled for release, according to Netflix, but we hope this show gets a chance.

  • Marco Polo & Narcos

[update] Netflix has informed us the following two programs are not slated for release.

We could see two more dramas for a 2014 release, Marco Polo and Narcos.  Marco Polo is about the Italian merchant’s early years in the court of Kublai Khan, the first non-Chinese to conquer all of China.  the series was originally set to premiere on Starz but was dropped and picked up by Netflix.

As for Narcos, the series will revolve around the life and death of notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was also considered as a modern day Robin Hood by the poor.
