From the court to the cloud : Passionate for the new economy | #reinvent

On Thursday’s broadcast of SiliconANGLE’s theCUBE, the CEO of SportXast, Molly Cernicek stopped by to talk with John Furrier and Dave Vellante. The company’s app, currently available on iOS, allows fanatical fans and proud parents to capture the best moments in youth, high school and college sports. Expect the app to show up on the Android market after the turn of the year.

The app, using AWS services, allows streams to traverse from mobile devices to the cloud and back, allowing the user to capture the game winning goal or run via a constant 8 second buffer. “Once everyone cheers, hit the button and it captures the previous 8 seconds of play,” stated Cernicek.

SportXast, only seven months old, received top recognition at this year’s Start-Up Week in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “We won the start-up competition,” says Cernicek. “There was not a cash prize for the honor but we have made connections for seed funding and were awarded free business development.” The app is now in beta testing. For those wishing to try the app out, simply text SPORT to 313131 and the app will be delivered to your device.

Cernicek also noted the app can get closer to the action with the addition of a 2x zoom to your device. However, the app works perfectly well without this add-on. Additionally, the app can recognize if two people are recording the same game, allowing users to access the better footage and share it via social media.

“People love to see great plays where they know the name or team associated with it. There may only be 100 people at a game, but 1,800 will watch it on Facebook.”

Passion for the emerging cloud economy

The app employs the use of both geolocation and hashtags to include others who may want to watch the footage. This is also helpful for student athletes gunning for a college scholarship. Anyone wanting to watch that athlete at their best can type their name as a hashtag to view each of the videos they are included in.

SportXast maintains they will continue to focus on the youth, high school and college scene as professional sports are already so well covered, with multiple camera-angles catching every aspect of a single game.

The future, says Cernicek, will involve the emerging technology of computer vision. “You can put your phone on a tripod and the camera will recognize a face or where the ball is and capture the play.”

SportXast has a passion for the emerging cloud economy because it has been so important for moving the company to where it is today, 7 short months after its inception. “Amazon has really given us the ability to be in the position to be bigger faster without a huge cash outlay.” Cernicek advises other start-ups to give AWS serious consideration as they are “fired up to help start-ups.”

Furrier asked Cernicek to come up with the bumper sticker that would best sum up the idea of this year’s AWS conference. Cernicek answered, “Go Big…Amazon is Behind You.”
