Android KitKat now available for Google Play edition devices

Android has posted on its Google+ page, that Android 4.4 “KitKat” will now be available for Google Play editions of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and HTC One.

Though this is great news for fAndroids, the question remains as to when this version will be available for other compatible devices.

Aside from wondering when the update will be available for the general public, others may be wondering what makes this version different from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

If you’re using a Nexus 5, it has a new feature that allows you to wake the phone just by saying “OK Google” and make it do your bidding – for example, getting directions, sending SMS or emails, or even play a song just by commanding it to do so with your voice.

Aside from that, KitKat also features a new immersive experience, wherein you can focus on the book you are reading or the video you are watching while everything else gets hidden. Plus, when you play music on your device or project a movie to Chromecast, you’ll see a beautiful full-screen album or movie art when the device is locked but still be able to control the media, such as pausing, pausing, playing or even seeking a specific moment.

KitKat offers a faster multitasking experience, prioritizes contacts based on the people you interact with the most, delivers a smart caller ID that ties an unknown number to local listings on Google Maps, a new Hangouts app which is a messaging hub for SMS, MMS, chat, and video calls, and Emoji on the Google Keyboard.

Then there’s cloud print, documents that are available anytime you need via Google Drive, Bluetooth MAP support so your Bluetooth-enabled car can communicate with your device, support for Chromecast, closed captioning, built-in device management, redesigned downloads app, easy home screen switching, infrared blasting, and many more new features.

From iPhone to Android

If Android KitKat intrigues you and you are now thinking of ditching you iPhone for either a Nexus 5 or another smartphone that runs KitKat, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has some tips on how to easily transition from being a fanboi to becoming a fAndroid.

“Many of my iPhone friends are converting to Android,” Schmidt wrote.

“The latest high-end phones from Samsung (Galaxy S4), Motorola (Verizon Droid Ultra) and the Nexus 5 (for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) have better screens, are faster, and have a much more intuitive interface.  They are a great Christmas present to an iPhone user!”

iPhone users may or may not appreciate an Android gift for Christmas, but nevertheless Schmidt has enumerated four main steps on how to painlessly transition from the former to the latter on his Google+ page. His instructions start with setting up your Android device, before moving on to updating your iPhone or iPad so you can sync your contacts easily to your Google account, connecting your music from iTunes to Google, and then removing your SIM from your iOS device to your Android device.

It’s a lengthy piece but quite informative as it has step-by-step instructions on how to migrate your contacts and other data from your iOS device to Android.
