More Americans interested in home automation, despite security risks

According to a survey conducted by Sunrun, more Americans are now interested in connecting various aspects of their lives to the Internet.  Those who are already using fitness trackers and lifelogging apps are more inclined to purchase home automation solutions.  While those who have kids are more interested in home automation solutions compared to those without kids.  This week’s SmartHome roundup also features the growing  concern for the security  of home automation solutions as well as Qualcomm’s new chips for connected homes.

Is it time for the ‘Wantified’ revolution?

The Quantified Self revolution is empowered by lifelogging apps and wearable tech but Dr. Pritpal S. Tamber believes that a Wantified revolution should be the focus.  The Quantified Self revolution may seem quite a daunting task especially when you are being dictated by a little device of what you should be achieving rather than a person identifying what he wants to achieve a healthier version of himself.  Dr. Tamber is leading a team of Wellthcare Explorers whose main goal is to find a way to identify what people really want in order for them to achieve a healthier life instead of focusing on health itself.  Also featured in this week’s Quantified Self rounup are the CleverCap and a Quantified Self project for implantable technology.

Manholes + battery swaps : Fixing electric car charges

One of the biggest challenge in the adoption of electric vehicles is that charging stations are not enough for you go on a cross country trip.  With this in mind, HEVO plans on making manhole covers capable of induction charging which will be placed in parking spots so you can park and charge while you go about your day, and Tesla Motors’  effort in building more charging stations to empower EV drivers and give them more freedom on the road.  Read all about them in this week’s SmartCar roundup.

Wearable tech aims to help the visually impaired

Sony applied for a patent for a SmartWig which aims to help people in various tasks such as navigation as well as get vital signs such as temperature and blood pressure of a person.  The technology also aims to help people with visual impairment be more mobile.  Another wearable tech that aims to help people with visual disability is GIST.  Read more about these gadgets in this week’s Wearable Tech roundup.
