Kim Dotcom’s Mega goes after Apple users with iOS client

Mega, the self-proclaimed “Privacy Company,” is moving deeper into the mobile universe with a new iOS application.

Released five months after Kim Dotcom’s online storage service hit Google Play, the client enables users to manage their cloud folders, share links to specific files, view photos and read messages from their MEGA contacts. The free downloadable app also allows users to upgrade their free account with more storage space if 50GB is not enough, and store as much as 1GB on their device’s local memory.

Founded almost a year to the day Megaupload was taken down by the FBI, Mega “encrypts and decrypts your data transparently in your browser, on the fly.” The company’s strong emphasis on privacy and generous free cloud offering attracted one million users in the first 24 hours, a number that tripled to three million in just over a month.

Mega has come under fire for allegedly serving as a front for piracy, but the accusations haven’t deterred users from flocking to the service en masse, nor have they stopped Kim Dotcom from expanding beyond the cloud into secure email and media streaming. The entrepreneur stepped down as the director of Mega in September to focus on his music venture, which is set to launch early next year.

Vikram Kumar, Mega’s new CEO, has also been making headlines recently. The former InternetNZ executive dived into the Lavabit controversy with a blog post calling on cloud providers to commit ‘Privacy Seppuku’ when faced with the choice of shutting down or handing over user to the feds.

“Kumar and Mega have seen an opportunity yet again to run flippant to US jurisdiction in this continuing fight against the intrusion of privacy and surveillance. It appears their mantra is it’s a free, private internet or nothing, and they’re asking others to take that pledge and join in,” commented SiliconANGLE CyberSecurity Editor John Casaretto.
