Snoop Dogg to sell next record for Bitcoin

Are Bitcoin enthusiasts interested in buying hit songs using their digital currency?

The answer’s not clear, but we could be about to find out if hip hop legend Snoop Dogg, a.k.a Snoop Lion, follows through with what he tweeted last week

That one of the biggest music stars in the world would even say such a thing will make Bitcoin believers ecstatic, but they probably shouldn’t get too excited just yet. Clearly Snoop is at least a little bit interested in BTC, but it’s likely that his tweet was a joke – for one thing, Amazon’s delivery drones are not yet in use and probably won’t take off for another four to five years, if they ever do.  But as far as accepting Bitcoin goes, that part may actually be true, as both BitPay and CoinBase were quick to respond to Snoop, stating that they can help him to make this plan happen.  Snoop asked them both to send him a direct message, so we could hear more about it soon.

The real good question here is not if this will actually happen, as there’s a huge possibility that it will, but why Snoop Dogg’s sudden interest in Bitcoin?  Most likely it has something to do with Bitcoin’s skyrocketing value – the cryptocurrency recently hit the $1,000 mark, and though it has since declined a little over the past week, it’s still looking very solid indeed.

More recently, Bitcoin also received a mention in an episode of The Simpson’s, courtesy of Krusty the Klown.  And even though Krusty was moaning about losing money on the Bitcoin markets, the fact that the cryptocurrency was mentioned on one of America’s most popular TV shows can’t hurt its popularity.

So what does this all mean?

According to Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins, SiliconANGLE’s Founding Editor and chief BTC know-it-all, going mainstream through pop culture will be a great boost for Bitcoin:

“Pop culture is wising up to the hype and popularity of Bitcoin, and using its pairing as a marketing vehicle for traditional goods and services. We’re probably looking at the next phase of growth for Bitcoin as a payment processing and currency, where pop culture begins to promote it to those outside the geek subculture,” Hopkins stated.

Linking up with a household name like Snoop Dogg will help Bitcoin shrug off the stigma currently attached to it – that it’s a currency  designed for illegal transactions on black market websites like the Silk Road.  If someone as popular as Snoop shows an interest in the cryptocurrency, his fans are surely going to take notice, and that will only help to boost its legitimacy.
