GitHub aquires collaborative web development company Easel

GitHub, which offers web development software service, has added another string to its bow by acquiring the specialist web design online firm Easel.

For those who do not know Easel: it is a paid tool to create simple websites (landing pages and prototypes) using a high-fidelity, in-browser platform. Easel can also be used for prototyping purposes and is based on absolute ease of use, provided by the tools excellent inline editor.

Easel’s co-founder Matt Colyer previously founded Flagr, from Y Combinator’s second batch in Winter 2006.  Mr. Colyer subsequently worked at AdRoll as an engineer with Easel co-founder Ben Ogle.

Ryan Day, GitHub’s chief revenue officer, explains in the blog post announcing GitHub’s acquisition of Easel:

“Matt Colyer and Ben Ogle started Easel because they weren’t satisfied with the workflow of designing for the web and believe that iterating on design should be straightforward and free of repetitive work. We could not agree more,” Day writes.

Although the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, TNW suggests that Easel will continue to operate as an independent company, since there are not many synergies between the two companies. The California start-up has developed a Web design tool in the browser, aimed at designers and developers working in small teams. Easel claims to do real web design elements, including Twitter and Bootstrap. The tool allows multiple users to work in the environment on a single HTML document, the changes made by each automatically synchronized.

Individual elements can be linked with other documents with the help of links to implement processes in prototypes. The elements can be changed with the help of CSS3, both directly with the corresponding code as well as through menus with matching dialogues.

A post on the official blog of Easel explains that the company continues to run as it has. “We’ll continue to provide support and all of our paid plans will continue to enjoy their current benefits. We’re excited to begin this new chapter and hope you’ll love what we have in store.”

GitHub is probably one of the most important open source repositories that currently exists, since almost all the important libraries and frameworks found there and just downloaded current processes can also be integrated. By acquiring Easel, the popular service for housing all the code developers write has fixed its gaze on web development where no code is involved at all. GitHub also wants to operate complete service management and build online source deposits by a web development tool. Another possible advantage is that developers could easily develop sophisticated plugin with the editor quickly within GitHub.

It seems that GitHub has taken the time to buy another smaller company. Its first acquisition, Ordered List, developer of software for creating and managing websites, was conducted in 2011.
