Weekly cloud review: SaaS vendors double down on privacy, expand footpirnt

Cloud computing is sweeping through the enterprise, but the allure of improved productivity and universal access comes at a heavy price, leaving IT organizations struggling to manage the risks introduced by the use of unauthorized – and potentially unsafe – applications.

Enter Bitglass, which emerged from stealth on Wednesday to eliminate the tradeoff between security and user experience in software-as-a-service solutions. The startup provides a reverse proxy that watermarks downloaded corporate files for easy tracking, allowing admins to ensure policy enforcement across devices without having to modify security settings, install special software on end-points devices or impose restrictions on how cloud applications are used.

Bitglass, which has raised $10 million in funding to date, claims that its unique approach to combating shadow IT makes it possible for organizations to strike the elusive balance between protecting corporate data and maintaining employee private. By only filtering for business information, the firm’s platform lets workers utilize personal apps in the office without having to worry about nosy administrators.

Enterprise collaboration vendor Huddle is also pushing the envelope on user experience with new Office integration that enables teams to access, manage and share files from a single interface. The connector can be used to upload Word, PowerPoint and Excel files directly to a cloud workspace, and displays recently changed documents directly in Office.

Finally, monitoring specialist Cloudyn added support for the Google Cloud Platform with a purpose-built module designed to help companies “monitor, compare and optimize all of their cloud deployments and assets from a single access point.” Besides providing visibility into resource consumption, it also includes a set of analytical capabilities for assessing the financial and operational impact of migrating from Amazon Web Services.
