New smart hub connects everything, from people to homes

This week’s SmartHome roundup features an automatic feeder for your furry pals, a connected sprinkler for greener lawns, and a smart hub that looks like a Russian nesting doll.

SmartFeeder

Most pet owners know how hard it is to leave your furry pal at home.  Mostly because pets are so cute and cuddly, but also because pet owners get worrisome over their eating habits. Petnet has come up with the SmartFeeder to help pet owners monitor feeding behavior or ensure that their pets are eating.

SmartFeeder has a storage bin that can keep up to seven pounds of dry pet food, with pellet size ranging from ⅛” to ⅞”.  The bowl portion of the feeder can hold up to 3 ½ cups of pet food, and comes with  sensors to monitor calorie intake, portion size, and if your pet ate.

The feeder itself has a Feed button so you can just push that when you want to feed Fido.  If you’re out, a smartphone app can help you manage your pet’s food intake.  The app also delivers notifications, including an alert when the food in the storage bin is running low and needs refilling.

Keeping your grass green and luscious can now be done smartly with skydrop, a sprinkler management system that helps you save on water and money.  It can be used to replace your existing sprinkler system or set it up as a new controller. Skydrop connects via the Internet, and will automatically sync with the skydrop cloud service.

The skydrop cloud service integrates weather information and adjusts watering needs based on local weather conditions.  The skydrop cloud service also allow you to manage your skydrop from any mobile device or web browser so you can water your lawn even when you’re out of state or the country.

Sense Mother

If you’re tired of having too many kinds of connected devices to manage, then Sense Mother and her little Motion Cookies can help you manage not only your home, but yourself as well.  Sense Mother is the smart hub that connects  her little minions and gathers all their data, so you can make sense of things.

The minions, er… Motion Cookies, can be placed anywhere you want things monitored. Stick it on a water bottle to monitor your water intake, or the refrigerator to monitor how often you open it. Measure the frequency between snacks, or get alerted when the garage door is left open. You can even put one on yourself to monitor how many steps you’ve taken each day. The sensors are quite opportunistic and adaptable. Other use cases include keeping tabs the pets, or monitoring the living room for temperature changes.

Each Motion Cookie can be reprogrammed for different purposes depending on your needs. Each unit also comes with a battery that lasts up to a year if you don’t take it outside, which means less maintenance to worry about.  The Motion Cookies automatically sync to Sense Mother when you arrive at home.
