Paxata: streamlining data analytics | #BigDataSV

medium_8022502400John Furrier and Dave Vellante welcomed Prakash Nanduri back to theCUBE this evening. Only 90 days ago, Nanduri announced live on theCUBE at #BigDataNYC the launch of Paxata, a company he co-founded and currently helms as CEO.

In the short time since, Paxata has seen broad adoption across their three business models: Pax Personal Subscription, Pax Share and Pax Enterprise. Nanduri highlighted specifically Paxata’s work with popular dairy producer, Dannon which adopted Paxata on a large scale after having worked previously with Paxata in a work group style license.

Paxata is, according to Nanduri, the industry’s first adaptive analytics program. Companies employing their product are able to speed up their analytics to mere minutes where once it would have required months of data preparation to achieve a workable analysis.

Business analysts would likely spend as much as 80 percent of their time digging through data sources, cleaning that data and preparing it for analysis. “It is a cumbersome task that can take weeks or months,” Nanduri stated. “What Paxata has done is take away all the hard tasks of merging, cleaning and shaping data. It allows a business analyst to focus on analysis through the use of our algorithms. It automates the heavy lifting.”

Vellante was interested in hearing more about Paxata’s work with Dannon. “I think it starts with the great vision of Tim Weaver, CEO of Dannon – North America,” Nanduri explained. “Business has a number of analytical needs and uses a number of analytical tools. As a business, they have the challenge of preparing the data.” Nanduri continued, “Dannon is focused on providing great dairy products for their customers to lead healthy lives. They focus [their analysis] on which products are being produced and when they are being delivered to market.”

Paxata’s expertise allows different business groups within the company to source data from multiple locations. “A lot comes internally,” stated Nanduri. “But a lot comes from outside sources like their market partners. They have to merge all data to analyze it.”

These multiple sources of data are often comprised of unstructured data. Vellante inquired how Paxata helped their customers work with unstructured data derived from sources outside the company. “What is interesting is, unlike in the traditional role, instead of only looking at internal data, you want to bring data from different sources.” Nanduri continued, “If you are doing demographics or social indicator of your product, you want to be able to merge your data from an unstructured source to your proprietary structured or semi-structured data. Paxata allows for that to occur in time and in an accurate manner.”

With the buzz that 2014 may likely be the year of Big Data, Furrier asked Nanduri what the emerging trends are that excite him. Nanduri stated he believed we would shortly be seeing a shift from comfort and ease of use of visual analytics to focusing on more important factors like data preparation and data governance.

The last point, regarding data governance, it should be noted was little talked about on day 1 of the #strataconf taking place just across the street from where SiliconANGLE was broadcasting theCUBE. However, in light of many recent high-profile data breeches and the Edward Snowden/NSA revelations, it is certain the Enterprise will address the serious security issues surrounding their customers data.
