Google Chrome Web Store is upgraded to offer monetization options for developers

chrome-new-iconAs a developer, you should spend as much time as possible in the creation of good content and services, and not need to manage your overheads. To facilitate developers with monetizing their extensions and themes, Google has launched a new upgrade to the Chrome Web Store that allows developers to start making a variety of products offered to the users with new monetization options.

Including in-app payment support, these new options are in addition to new publishing options rolling out that Google says will help developers focus more on making great content and less on overhead.

Chrome Web Store is a great place for developers to market and sell Chrome apps. Since its inception, the web store is a great place for developers to manage content. The addition of in-app monetization option through Chrome Web Store API now enables developers not only to manage but to create, update and publish products. For those that already have an automated build and deployment process, the API can be added into their publishing flow.

Google has also added new monetization methods. The current hosted apps support all four types of payment options including free trial, paid up-front, subscription, and in-app payments. The upgrade store will now support package apps, extensions, and themes. Developers can also make money through in-app payments.

Managing in-app payments for these services has also been simplified. Developers can now manage these payments directly from their Developer Dashboard. The Managed In-App Payments feature simplifies the developer experience in providing newer solutions. Google says developers can now create and manage all of in-app products directly in the developer dashboard instead of having to embed or dynamically generate and serve a payment token for each sale. Developers can enable or disable products, provide localized descriptions, set prices for different regions and the Chrome Web Store manages the licensing.

The web store will now also let developers offer their customers free trials for their products for a limited amount of time. The Store will manage the expiry of the product once the time parameter is set. Moreover, the Chrome Web Store API also supports automatic build and deployment processes and thus basically automates the publishing process.

The new monetization methods give developers more of the pricing choices they have available to them when they place their work in the mobile apps market including Google Play for Android and App Store for Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

These changes are likely to attract developers or at least motivate them. Extensions or add-ons have contributed to the richness of the Firefox browser. They have long been and still are free but Mozilla has introduced the possibility of a voluntary contribution of the user to support their development.

At the end of last year, Google has decided to impose a ban on the installation of third-party extensions for the Chrome browser and now you can only install extensions from the Chrome Web Store. For Chrome users, it means that developers who were not interested because there was no money in it will now start looking a little more seriously on the Chrome Web Store ecosystem.

Since Google’s Chrome OS is becoming more widespread and is now accepted in the mainstream, the move would increase the demand for and supply of apps in the Chrome Web Store. It will also provide full distribution model programs to attract larger and more well-known brands on the market application.
