Udderly clever wearable tech solutions

This week’s WearableTech roundup features an inconspicuous smart eyewear, solar garments for charging your mobile devices, and a collar that tracks when cows are in heat.

Epiphany Eyewear

Epiphany Eyewear

 .

If you’re looking for a smartglass that fits your hipster lifestyle, Epiphany Eyewear‘s newest pair of glasses may be just the device to fit your needs.  It features a 720p HD camera fitted right on the frame so it’s not sticking out like Google’s Glass camera. Epiphany Eyewear specs also come with a Lithium ion rechargeable battery capable of fast-charging in 35 minutes and lasts an hour while recording videos, and the frame is crafted from soft-touch plastic titanium for durability. The lenses are UV protected with options for prescription glasses or sunglasses, and the on/off button is the palpable logo of the company found on the arm of the glasses.

Touch the logo to turn on the device and start recording videos – when you’re done recording, just touch the logo again.  The data port that doubles as the charging port is found on the bottom of the right side of the glasses temple, and you can charge and sync data when you connect the device to your computer.

It has limited functionality but the company is working on Smart Sunglasses – an electronic transition sunglass lenses, Sportiiiis –  a heart rate LED HUD for fitness enthusiasts, and the Glance AR – a detachable on-the-go display that would allow the wearer to see incoming calls, read text or email, get notifications, get directions, watch videos and more.

Epiphany Eyewear is available in 8/16/32GB storage options, and pricing starts at $299.  Artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis use the device the during the grand finale of their Thrift Shop tour and shared their on-stage footage with the company.

Wearable Solar

 .

Dutch designer Pauline van Dongen has come up with a way for fashion to support people’s mobile lives.  Wearable Solar is a line of clothing that uses thin foils of flexible solar cells to line the inside of a garment, while crystalline cells are placed strategically throughout various parts of the garment.  The designer stated that the wearer needs only an hour of sun exposure to charge their smartphone by 50 percent.  There’s a wire inside the garment that would allow the wearer to connect a smartphone to charge it.

“Wearable technology is literally what it says,” notes van Dongen. “All the things that we (will) carry around, like smart watches and Google Glass, they all need continuous power. Wearable Solar aims to give a sustainable solution to these problems that we’ll be facing more and more.”

Silent Herdsman

.

Cattle raisers looking for a solution to help them increase yields and profitability may be interested in the Silent Herdsman.  This is a system that uses a collar for cows or heifers to continuously monitor their activity and analyze changes in activities to determine patterns related to giving birth and fertility.

Silent Herdman’s system, which recently took in just under $5 million in new funding,  is easy to setup and install, and all you need is a computer or tablet to access and monitor data.  To save on the collar’s battery life, it only sends out an alert when the cows enter a critical state or reaches the peak of their cycle or condition.  The system aims to help maximize fertility, milk yield and operational efficiency.
