The San Jose Earthquakes will be accepting bitcoin with the upcoming soccer season.

This makes the Quakes the second professional sports team to take bitcoin as a payment option—following the Sacremento Kings (an NBA team) who announced that March 1st would mark their acceptance of bitcoins. Soccer fans can expect to use the virtual currency for anything from the merchandise store as well as tickets to see games.

The San Jose Earthquakes are an American team and a Major League Soccer participant. Together the Quakes have won two MLS Cup titles, 2001 and 2003, and two MLS Supporters’ Shields in 2005 and 2012.

“In May, we are actually taking Bitcoin in our stadium for merchandise–hopefully for concessions as well–but definitely for merchandise,” Dave Kaval, President of the San Jose Earthquakes said during SiliconANGLE’s TheCube. “We hope to create a really seamless experience as we can. We want to produce a seamless commerce experience with your mobile.” He added that maybe with your mobile you could use something like Passbook with Apple and just have the system recognize your access as you approach the doors and let you in.

According to SiliconANGLE founding editor Mark Hopkins, the team’s delay in accepting bitcoins happened because two separate processors they intended to partner with ended up going out of business. However, this experience did not sour Kaval to the potential opportunity and he eventually went with BTC payment processor Bitpay.

When asked why he went with Bitpay, Kaval responded that it came down to professionalism and a good product. “We took our time and did our research,” he said, “and they seemed like the organization with the most robust solutions.”

The San Jose Earthquakes also have a brand new stadium opening next year. Bitcoin will be amid a list of new technologies being used will really set the Quakes and the stadium apart from anywhere else in the world.
