HTC suffers another loss, will the M8 be its salvation?

live_htc_logo_featureHTC has posted its first quarter results and the company reported losses greater than analysts’ expectations.

The Taiwanese company revealed losses of NT$1.88 billion, or $62 million, greater than the NT$1.71 billion average loss previously estimated by analysts. The company’s revenue for the quarter fell to NT$33.1 billion, from NT$42.8 billion a year earlier. A total operating loss of NT$2.05 billion was posted by HTC, wider than the NT$1.94 billion average estimate.

“The company expects to see positive trajectory of its revenue in April from March and forecasts quarter-on-quarter revenue growth in the second quarter,” HTC said in the statement.

Despite the grim outcome of the previous quarter, HTC remains positive that its new flagship smartphone, the HTC One M8, as well as its mid-tier smartphone offering the HTC Desire 816, will drive sales for the next quarter.

The HTC One M8 was launched at the end of March and features a 5” Super LCD3, 1080 x 1920 pixels, capacitive touchscreen display, with dual front-facing HTC BoomSound speakers, a 2600 mAh battery, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor. There’s also 16GB or 32GB storage options, as well as microSDXC support for up to an additional 128GB of storage, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX. The HTC One M8 runs Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 6 – HTC’s redesigned user interface. It also comes with a 5MP front-facing camera and a 4MP Duo Camera at the back to deliver stunning 3D photos.

HTC’s March sales have already climbed by 2.2 percent to NT$16.2 billion, the company’s first increase in monthly revenue since October 2011. The company is expected to continue on this path as more M8s are sold, which is why its stocks rose to 3.6 percent to close at NT$159.50 in Taipei before the earnings announcement. The rise in stock price is attributed to the positive reception of consumers to its new devices.

The main question analysts are posing now is whether sales of the M8 will be sustained in the following months for the company to be able to finally post a strong quarter, or will interest in HTC devices soon fizzle out?
