EMC bets big on hybrid clouds swallowing the enterprise

Hybrid cloudIT companies offer their customers dozens of ways to either build their own hybrid or private clouds, and EMC has just joined the party with the launch of its new EMC Hybrid Cloud package. Announced at EMC World earlier this week, the solution is claimed to deliver rapid application provisioning and deployment alongside improved levels of IT automation.

EMC’s Hybrid Cloud builds upon its trusted on-premise solutions, while giving enterprises the option of adding multiple cloud service providers into the mix. Better still, EMC claims its Hybrid Cloud can be deployed in just 48 hours – a feat it proved at EMC World yesterday.

“The new EMC Hybrid Cloud solution with VMware vCloud Hybrid Service will enable organizations to quickly and seamlessly extend their data centres into the cloud using the same tools and processes they already have in place,” commented Bill Fathers, SVP and GM of Hybrid Cloud Services at VMware.

Hybrid clouds will be everywhere

When building out their IT infrastructure, enterprises are faced with a difficult choice – public clouds, which are flexible and quick to deploy, or private clouds, which provider superior security and information control.

But with EMCs Hybrid Cloud Solution, this choice could soon be obsolete. The product combines rolls all the benefits of private and public cloud infrastructure into one, a cost-effective and easy to use solution that EMC believes will prove to be the best choice for the vast majority of enterprises going forward.

“We’re absolutely convinced that hybrid is the answer.” said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, during an appearance on theCUBE. “Today on premise is 92 percent of IT spend. Eight percent is in the cloud,” he added.

This falls in line with an earlier prediction from Gartner, which estimates that almost half of all large enterprises will have hybrid cloud deployments by the end of 2017.

Gelsinger estimates that by 2022, around 75 percent of IT spend will be on premise, adding that, “even from the spend perspective, it’s going to be hybrid. It’s clearly a hybrid world.” He points to all the other big players in the cloud industry, including Amazon and Google, who’re all making their own hybrid plays.

His comments were echoed by Sean Wedige, CTO of Global Enterprise Solutions at Rackspace, and David Frattura, Senior Director in the office of the CTO for EMC, in a separate appearance on theCUBE.

Asked about how the cloud industry has evolved over the last year, Wedige noted its “been incredible in terms of adoption of public cloud by our customers.” Even so, he points out that people are realizing the public cloud isn’t the answer to every problem. “They want the flexibility of a hybrid solution,” Wedige explained. “It’s been a fast moving year.”

Frattura elaborated on this point, saying that larger enterprises and governments often require a more tailored architecture to build upon, and that’s where the hybrid cloud comes into play. “Hybrid is a core fundamental piece for us,” Frattura explained. “We have to service a range of needs and must find mechanisms and means to deliver to customers in the paradigm they exist in today.”

And that’s where EMC is headed right now, as part of a wider strategy aimed at driving its customers towards the software-defined data center.

“With today’s announcement of the EMC Hybrid Cloud solution, we are offering the industry’s best method for IT to deliver added value to the business while evolving into to a broker of services - whether in-house or from a public cloud,” said Josh Kahn, SVP of Global Solutions and Marketing at EMC.

“Our objective is to make it simpler for IT organizations to deploy well run Hybrid Clouds in a matter of days and deliver the same or even better agility and efficiency benefits to public clouds.”
