Developers will love Firebase’s new easy, secure app hosting service

firebase-logo-blogBackend-as-a-service provider Firebase started out as a database backend service infrastructure company that helps build web applications in real time, aimed to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, online collaboration tools, multiplayer games, messaging and other types of apps.

Now, the company is taking a step in another direction. Firebase has expanded its range and now offers hosting as a new service. Thanks to a partnership with content-distribution network (CDN) Fastly, and billed by Firebase as “production-grade hosting for developers,” Firebase Hosting is designed for use by mission-critical sites and apps.

The company said that developers are dealing with SSL certificates, CDNs, and server configurations for publishing mobile apps in the various app stores provided by Microsoft, Google and other services, but hosting these apps can be a pain for developers and none of these platforms offer service for web apps.

Firebase Hosting eases all these common obstacles and provides developer a complete package including real time database and hosting for their apps. The service delivers SSL encryption for all content, hosting of static content, delivery of content via a CDN and automatic version management of deployments. Firebase is also building support for Fastly’s CDN with data centers around the world to keep things running smoothly.

On top of this, developers have the option to publish their apps by providing one-command deploy and one-click rollback to host static files, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images.

“As time goes by and the company grows and we’ll have more resources, we’ll continue to become the platform,” cofounder and chief executive James Tamplin told VentureBeat. “We’re not just a data storage technology. We want to be the place you come to when you build an app. We want to be the single best place to build an app.”

For developers who don’t need a custom domain, Firebase offers a free tier to test. For Firebase’s paid plans, the company is offering support for the hosting service as well as 10GB of storage and 1TB of transfer. The hosting service is in beta for three months and developers have already deployed 1,300 apps on it so far.

Fire Base provides a command line tool for the hosting service. The installation is on the Node.js Package Manager npm. Support for server-side platforms such as Node.js is currently not available.

Last year, Firebase launched to the public its database service with a new pricing structure. The company is offering 100MB of storage and 5GB of bandwidth per month free of charge to developers. The paid plans ranges from $50 to $1,500 per month, depending on usage and number of developers use the system.
