Managing human-generated metadata, access + protection | #EMCworld

David Gibson Varonis

Human-generated data describes the meta-data a company generates through its day-to-day operations. On a daily basis, company employees typically have access to information they shouldn’t. Varonis provides an innovative software platform that gives enterprise businesses the ability to manage their human-generated data, including analyzing, managing, and migrating their meta-data. David Gibson, VP of marketing at Varonis, recently talked to theCUBE at EMC World 2014 in which he spoke of his company’s efforts to help its customers manage the massive amounts of human-generated data they generate every year.

In the age of massive security breaches, such as WikiLeaks and the Target breach, companies are looking for ways to manage and protect their data. Varonis helps simplify the data provisioning process by automating many of the manual procedures involved. The company also helps enterprises migrating to a new platform by automating that process as well. Varonis helps employees gain access to the data they need quickly and from the right devices, regardless of where they are.

When it comes to data and employees, not just anybody should have access to all data. The Varonis technology harnesses human-generated meta-data and determines who can and should have access to data. They can also determine what the data a company has “contains,” the sensitivity of the data, and where it suffers from the most exposure. This includes determining who is responsible for the data and involving them in making critical decisions concerning that data.

When asked what companies can gain from controlling their human-generated data, Gibson responded, “There is just so much intellectual capital out there that we can get more value from if we mine it for meta-data — if we analyze it and bring the right focus onto the problem.”

Gibson also talked about DatAnywhere, which allows companies to give mobile access to their employees without having to change their IT infrastructure, move their data, and without having to reconfigure any permissions. According to Gibson, the purpose of DatAnywhere is “to enable the same kind of functionality using existing storage.” DatAnywhere allows companies to take their existing storage and allow file sync, mobile device access, and third-party sharing.

With human-generated data growing at a rate of about 50 percent per year, many companies have started taking a big interest in how they manage their data. They now want to know how they can maximize the vast data stores they do have, using it to become more efficient and productive.
