HP’s Federated Catalyst aims to simplify backup silo management

small__294648566Just before the HP Discover event kicks off in Las Vegas today, Hewlett-Packard has announced a number of new backup, recovery and archive solutions. But the real standout of these products is the addition of HP StoreOnce Federated Catalyst – which offers federated backup stores capabilities – to HP StoreOnce 6500.

HP says its Federated Catalyst software has been designed as a solution to cut out the data protection and complexity issues that are caused when numerous backup stores are run across multiple nodes.

“With this new capability, HP StoreOnce Backup reduces management overhead by 75 percent by eliminating physical mapping of backup jobs to individual backup appliances and freeing up administrators’ time so they can focus on higher value IT projects,” said the company in a statement.

The new software also helps to modernize siloed backup infrastructures, says HP. It does so by allowing the consolidation of backup stores into an elastic pool of aggregated capacity spread across numerous nodes, allowing for over 17 petabytes of protected data. HP StoreOnce Federated Catalyst comes with features like adaptive bidding and routing that rely on workload-aware analytics to ensure load-balancing. This means the data is stored in the most ideal location for general usage, backup and restore. Even better, the technology is able to support aggregation across devices and also hybrid clouds, supporting complex protection requirements without the need for any added administration.

Federated Catalyst will be priced at $37,500 per couplet, while the StoreOnce 6500 system will start at $375,000 when the products come available in July.

As for the other new solutions HP’s announced, these include improvements to HP StoreOnce Backup to boost efficiency. It now supports non-deduplicating data types together with deduplicated backup stores. HP StoreOnce Backup also adds increased scale for NAS-based backup, said the company.

HP Data Protector has also been given a boost with increased integration with third-party backup software, together with new features in HP StoreOnce Integrity Plus that check to see if data can be restored without corruption. The latest version of the software, HP Data Protector 9.0, will be available from July priced at $1,238.

Another product, HP StoreOnce Security Pack, is available immediately and prevents unauthorized access to data both in transit and at rest via strong encryption. Aside from this, it also ensures that data is totally erased and cannot be recovered once it’s deleted.
