Top 5 perks for work: Microsoft’s new Lumia 830

Microsoft, Corp. describes its new Lumia 830 as “the affordable flagship” of its smartphones selection. Much of the buzz has been about the smartphone’s PureView camera, which offers a new set of capabilities, but the Lumia 830 comes equipped with features that suggest Microsoft seeks to craft an ideal mid-range business device.

Thinking of buying? Consider these top features of Microsoft’s Lumia 830:

Top 5 perks of the Lumia 830 for business users

1. Camera

The Lumia 830’s PureView camera offers 10MP resolution. Engadget’s Brad Molen explains that while the camera isn’t as powerful as the Lumia 930 or 1020, the 830 costs less. He describes it as an even trade-off, depending on user preferences. The updated camera enables burst shot capability, and faster shot-to-shot and pocket-to-picture times. Molen called out the camera’s unique ability that allows users to change the flash effect in the picture when editing, finding a happy medium between too dark and too bright.

2. Design

According to Marie Brewis of PC Advisor, the 10MP helps keep the Lumia 830’s design sleek. Andy Vandervell of Trusted Reviews describes it as the “thinnest OIS camera [Nokia] has ever made.” As the Lumia 830 is only 8.5 mm wide, its thinner than either the 930 or 1020. At 150g, it’s also Nokia’s  lightest phone yet. It has a 5 inch screen with 720p display and, said Molen in his Engadget review, is as “easy to hold” as the pricer 930. The Lumia 830 runs on a 2,200mAh battery and a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400.

 .

3. Software

The Lumia 830 comes with Windows Phone 8.1.1, a Lumia Denim update that includes a host of features, like voice-controlled Cortana that functions even when the phone is idle. The phone has native integration with Microsoft Office. Its business-friendly deployment tools allow employers to restrict apps on business phones and quickly configure new work phones with app export settings.

 .

4. Storage

In his review, Vandervell wasn’t over the moon about the Lumia 830’s Snapdragon 400 processor. Brett Nuckles, the Business News Daily Tech editor, described it as “pretty good.” But, both reviewers applauded the 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, and 15GB of OneDrive storage. That storage can be augmented with a microSD card.

5. Accessories

The Lumia 830 comes with features that make it a worthy, affordable handset for employees on the go: Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC support is included, making it easier to stay connected and to make secure payments; It comes with a wireless charging stand that allows users to set their phone on a pad to charge it. The Lumia 830 screen sharing accessory is also business-friendly. It allows users to “beam what they’re working on with to an HDMI-equipped monitor or projector,” according to Nuckles.

CNet calls the new Lumia 830 “top shelf and budget friendly.” While the PureView camera is an exciting aspect in a mid-range phone, the business-friendly features are perhaps the most useful part of the Lumia 830. Tools like screen share, integration with Microsoft Office, and new phone configuration suggest that Microsoft is aiming for offices that need to enhance workplace collaboration and connectivity. Prices for the United States haven’t been announced yet, but in Europe the starting price is €219, about $434.
