“Twitter is misunderstood on Wall Street and in the mainstream,” said John Furrier, SiliconANGLE cofounder, commenting on the recent results released by the social network. “What they have is an amazing real-time notification network,” Furrier explained. But, he added, the metrics used to evaluate it are not the right ones for Twitter Inc., but better suited for Facebook.

“How people use it as a real-time notification network, it is not like [Facebook, Inc.]. Twitter is about the people, and that is a fundamental thing. We believe that relationships will matter, and Twitter has that,” Furrier said, saying that he considers Twitter a buy in that many don’t understand the true value of what Twitter is building.

In their analysis of investment opportunities during the IBM Insight 2014 event, theCUBE hosts John Furrier, Dave Vellante, and Jeff Kelly also discussed the Big Data and Hadoop industry. From an investment thesis perspective, investors are now trying to decide where to place their bets, whether those investors are emerging companies or big whales such as IBM.

While there is going to be a lot of value created in the vendor community, the most value will be generated by practitioners, according to Jeff Kelly, principle research analyst, Wikibon. These practitioners will create the new companies, new startups, completely new industries. If businesses can tease out who those companies are and who are the companies that use data most effectively, that is where to invest, Kelly added.

Commenting on what IBM customers do with Big Data analytics, Kelly said that according to a Wikibon survey, “30 percent of early adopters of Big Data are using Hadoop and/or NoSQL. When you look to the IBM customer base, naturally they are going to be more conservative.”

Many of the IBM customers are doing a lot of interesting things with Big Data analytics, but less than a third use Hadoop or NoSQL or adopt new technologies. The trend is to get practical Big Data analytics usage while trying to leverage the investments that you’ve already made, Kelly explained.
