Cloudant has flourished under IBM ownership, said Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle. From within IBM, Cloudant has been able to deliver on its yearned-for goal of becoming a standard data layer. The capability is called Cloudant Local, and it enables users to move data freely between public and private cloud.

This capability goes hand-in-hand with IBM’s focus on hybrid cloud. IBM has followed the hybrid path based on customer preference, said Schoettle. Many customers don’t want to leave behind their existing technology, but want to get ready for coming changes.

IBM wanted Cloudant “for its IP and its ability to operationalize,” explained Schoettle. The ultimate goal is making cloud easy and accessible for clients. And Cloudant does that, he added. The ability to operationalize data and cloud, explained the Cloudant CEO, starts in design. Products have to start “as a service” from the very beginning so that they’re scalable, easy-to-use, and intuitive from the starting bell.

Open source is also quickly becoming an essential part of the database market. Schoettle explained that companies don’t want to feel they’re beholden to one or two companies. In order to ensure customers continue using their products, companies now need to provide constant value to the customer. IBM’s response to these shifting dynamics is to take an “ecosystem approach,” acquiring companies like Cloudant that are committed to open source and managing data in ways that create value for the customer.
