Quirky kills the thermostat with new product launch

 

 

General Electric Co. and Quirky Inc. unveiled new products for the Internet of Things to complete your smart home efforts. The latest lineup includes a smart light switch, smart garage door opener, smart water leakage detector, and even a smart HVAC system that aims to kill the traditional thermostat.

Also featured in this roundup is a smart water sprinkler called Blossom that aims to reduce outdoor water consumption by as much as 30 percent, and the CSR1010 connected car platform which allows automotive manufacturers to add new features to existing infotainment systems.

New wearable trackers provide actionable insight for all

 

This week’s roundup features new trackers for basketball players to track and analyze their shooting skills called the ShotTracker, FATE – FAll DeTector for the Elderly which uses accelerometry to analyze when an elderly has fallen and alert the proper individuals, and the MocaHeart, a small device that measures blood pressure, blood oxygen and related vital signs.

IoT already in use for more than half of global business

 

According to a survey commissioned by Zebra Technologies Corporation, 80 percent of the respondents believe that Internet of Things solutions will be the most strategic initiative for their organization within a decade. The survey shows how the enterprise sees the importance of IoT for their respective businesses. Included in this roundup is new information on how smart traffic lights can relieve road congestion brought about by the majority of drivers looking for a place to park, and Detroit’s Royal Oak to get a smart park in the small area behind the Center Street parking structure.

Upgrades for Zigbee and other Industrial Internet protocols

 

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. introduced IStaX software (VSC6815SDK), a robust protocol stack to simplify deployment and management of Industrial-IoT network applications such as Industrial Ethernet switching, surveillance, video distribution, LCD signage, intelligent sensors, and metering equipment.

Also included in this roundup is the new ZigBee 3.0 to unify the Internet of Things, and the WeMo Maker which allows tinkerers and inventors to connect and control low volt electronic device using smartphones and tablets.
