Apple Watch site updated, showcases new Watch features

apple watch stainless steelApple Inc. has updated the marketing site for its upcoming Apple Watch. The site now has more details about the wearable and showcases its many features in detail with the help of beautiful interactive graphics. The site focuses on three main feature sets, namely “Timekeeping”, “New Ways to Connect” and “Health & Fitness”.

On the Timekeeping page the marketing folk at Apple tell us that the Apple Watch, while doing everything a watch should, is no ordinary watch. It connects with your calendar, your contacts and your schedule. It apparently understands what time means to you as an individual and helps you be more productive and efficient.

The page divulges more about some of the watch faces that are included with the Apple Watch, including details about Complications –specialized functions on a watch face like moon phases, sunrise and sunset, or, in the case of Apple Watch, information such as stock quotes and weather or even your daily activity tracker.

The New Ways to Connect page shows how the ‘Friends’ feature lets the wearer “reach out in one of the new ways only Apple Watch makes possible.” By pressing the button next to the Digital Crown, you access ‘Friends’ where you are shown thumbnails of the people you most regularly interact with –simply tap to send a message or call them. In addition to traditional forms of communication like text, voice or email, Apple Watch lets you draw a picture or share your heartbeat with other Apple Watch wearers. If you start on the watch, but would rather continue on your iPhone, a featured called ‘Handoff’ lets you transfer messages, calls, and email from Apple Watch to iPhone.

The Health & Fitness page shows in detail how the built in Activity app tracks the wearer’s movements. It uses an accelerometer, heart rate sensor and the Wi-Fi and GPs from the user’s iPhone. The watch tracks movement, exercise and how often the wearer stands up throughout the day. It will even gently remind you if you’ve been sitting down for too long.

The built-in Workout app shows real-time stats like time, distance, calories burnt, pace and speed for a range of common workouts such as running, cycling and walking.  You can set goals for your exercise sessions and compare your results against your personal best. The results count toward your Activity app measurements on the given day.

Last week Apple released WatchKit to allow the iOS developer community to start creating apps for Apple Watch and its rumored the wearable will finally launch in spring 2015.
