HP Helion gets full release, all about open source | #HPDiscover

Mark Interrante

Hewlett-Packard Co.’s HP Helion is all about open source and sharing everything, according to the company. “It’s very exciting to get a full release delivered along with the developer environment,” said Mark Interrante, SVP, Engineering, HP Cloud, in his live interview from HP Discover Barcelona with theCUBE co-hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante. “Everything that is practical goes open source,” he added. HP believes “in being a member of the community. We like in putting a lot of stuff upstream, that’s of value to us,” Interrante said.

While Helion is an open source product that could work in any environment, the focus in on HP hardware. “We’re trying to make Helion work best on HP gear,” Interrante said. “I have been impressed by the variety of hardware we offer. The cloud line is optimized for minimum print, maximum compute for power,” he added.

HP Cloud is aiming to invest more in 2015 and is actively hiring. Interrante stated, “We’re growing very rapidly. We’re excited about both the Hellion growth rates and the cloud system.” The hiring focus is on “people who love open source,” have software development experience, and online experience, he explained. Another focus area for Interrante and HP as a whole is great user interface design, from both and investment and hiring standpoint. All of these focuses meld together to hopefully help create a future HP and all it’s groups can be proud of.
