Two years late, Instagram adds new filters and hides the ones you never use

Instagram has recently hit a new milestone, surpassing Twitter, Inc.’s 284 million users. The photo editing and sharing service has reached 300 million users, taking the opportunity to announce five new filters and a slew of other filter updates.

New filters

In 2012, Instagram added Mayfair and Willow to its family of filters, but since then, no new filters have been released–until now. To herald the upcoming new year, and probably to make its 300 million users happy, Instagram introduced five new filters: Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Aden, and Perpetua. The new filters soften and subtly adjust the colors of a photo to make for a more dramatic shot.

Filter tray update

Aside from the five new filters, Instagram has also updated how the filters are displayed. Instead of seeing the stand-in photo of a hot air balloon at the bottom with the different filters applied, you will now see each filter icon showing a blurred preview of your photo when that certain filter is applied. This update allows you to see at a glance what your photo will look like without having tap on the filters.

Manage your filters

Many users have a handful of Instagram filters they use more often than others. But as Instagram plans to continuously add more filters over time, there’s a chance it will be harder to pick a favorite filter. So Instagram’s added a “Manage” button to the filter tray for rearranging the order of your filters, including an option to hide rarely used filters.
