A changing tide in tablet sales? New Microsoft site pushes Surface Pro 3 on MacBook users

appleIn the consumer tech days of yore when the now mighty Apple Inc. was still playing catch-up to the seemingly insuperable Redmond giant Microsoft Corp. it was the former who were often seen tempting people to ‘switch over’ to their products by implementing informational acts of persuasion into their marketing regime. Microsoft, having found itself standing in Apple’s shadow, is now up to the same tricks. Buy the Surface Pro 3, says Microsoft on its new website, in a roundabout way, and this is why and how it will work for you.

The site, officially named, ‘Making the switch: MacBook to Surface Pro 3’, is not dedicated to telling you why you should make the move, it’s more about how to make the transition with ease, and how to migrate Apple products, such as iPhone, iCloud and iTunes, to Microsoft’s hybrid tablet. Other questions answered by Microsoft include information on keyboard shortcuts, system settings, accessing apps and staying clear of viruses – something Microsoft makes clear can also happen on Macs.

Microsoft is not pointing the finger and saying “this is why our hybrid is better than your Macbook” on the new site, but the damage had already been done this year with the company’s aggressive marketing campaign in which the Pro 3 spanked the MacBook numerous times. Perhaps Microsoft feels the crowds have been seduced, and now it’s time to lead them to their salvation.

Many users of the Macbook Air and Surface Pro 3 have said the comparison is like pitting apples against oranges, althoughMicrosoft has insisted that the Pro 3 will “out-perform” the Macbook Air on every level. Maybe sales are the only barometer we can rate performance, as quality is a matter of opinion, and opinions are polarized on the subject of the two products. Microsoft is yet to release sales figures for their new hybrid, although we are told it’s been the fastest selling tablet yet. Macbook Air on the other hand is expected to see 2014 sales of 32 million units sold, rise to 55 million in 2015. It will be interesting to see how many Macbook users make the switch, and if so, how many of them will be content with their decision.
