LibertyX makes it easy to buy Bitcoins this Christmas

small__14367568955Buying Bitcoin is now as simple as paying for a pack of gum at your favorite convenience store. Just pay cash and get the product in return, but in this case, you get a code in exchange for cash thanks to LibertyX.

LibertyX got its start operating Bitcoin vending kiosks that let people exchange cash for Bitcoin. Now the company has expanded and widened its efforts by partnering with local stores to bring the cryptocurrency closer to the average consumer. Before, people had to search for places that had Bitcoin ATMs, and to be honest, there aren’t many as the machines are quite expensive and not many establishments want to invest in something that consumers may not be interested in.

With this new effort, interested merchants don’t have to purchase or lease a Bitcoin ATM as everything can be done with the equipment they already have.

How it works

LibertyX is working with 2,500 stores made up of mostly local businesses across the US including Cambridge, San Francisco, Lowell and Missoula, Mont.

To use LibertyX’s new service, all you have to do is check which local stores near you are participating in the scheme. After finding a store in your area, you can head on over to the cashier and buy a LibertyX Bitcoin PIN. Redeem the PIN online and then sit back and wait for the Bitcoins to arrive in the address you have provided.

“We’re doing the same thing (as the ATMs), just cheaper, faster, more convenient,” Kyle Powers, co-founder of LibertyX said.

Aside from expanding its Bitcoin efforts, LibertyX raised a little more than $400,000 in private investment led by venture capital firm Project 11 headed by Katie Rae, Reed Sturtevant and Bob Mason, formerly of TechStars Boston.
